According to the Hollywood Reporter, Steve Martin and Universal chairman Adam Fogelson appeared before the Classification and Ratings Appeals Board to argue for a PG-13 rating for the upcoming Nancy Meyers comedy. Their request was denied, and the film has been officially rated R for "some drug content and sexuality."

'It's Complicated,' which opens on Christmas Day, stars Meryl Streep as a woman caught in a love triangle with her ex-husband (Alec Baldwin) and a new suitor (Martin).

Ultimately, the R rating will probably have little to no impact on the film's box office prospects, as the movie is being targeted toward adults well over 18 years old anyway. And Hollywood's concerns over the "dreaded" R rating continue to be somewhat puzzling -- if the movie is, you know, good, then people will go see it, regardless of what it's rated.

Just look at this past summer's 'The Hangover' -- that was rated R and it made something like a trillion dollars.
