If Universal Pictures can imbue a fourth 'Bourne' movie with as much intrigue as the film's development process, they'll have quite a cliffhanger on their hands.

After news broke last week that 'The Bourne Supremacy' and 'The Bourne Ultimatum' director Paul Greengrass would not be signing on to direct the fourth installment of the 'Bourne' franchise, Universal quickly issued an exit statement from Greengrass insisting that the split was amicable. In it, he states, "My decision to not return a third time as director is simply about feeling the call for a different challenge."

So, is 'Bourne' star Matt Damon "feeling the call for a different challenge" as well?

At Thursday's red-carpet premiere of his new film 'Invictus,' Damon told Entertainment Weekly he would not return to 'Bourne 4' without Greengrass at the helm.

"[Paul's] ready to do another job, and it wasn't the right job now. I get it," Damon said. "I wouldn't do it without him, but I don't feel like he's done with it totally. I think he'd change his mind if a good script came along. If there was a great 'Bourne' idea, he would love to do it. It's a big part of his life, too. We're still going to keep working together -- and hopefully on another 'Bourne' movie, too."

He confirmed this sentiment at a weekend press conference for 'Invictus,' telling Coming Soon and other reporters, "When [Greengrass] wants to do [another 'Bourne' film], we'll do it. ... I think it'll happen down the road. We just don't have a script yet."

Whether Universal agrees remains to be seen. But Damon's loyalty to the director -- he appears in Greengrass's 'Green Zone' early next year -- seems to preclude him from a Greengrass-less 'Bourne.'

So, will Universal will seek out another actor for 'Bourne 4'? Or, if Damon won't do it, should they pull the plug on the next installment? What say you?
