I was already excited about the prospects of a sequel to Adam Green's cult slasher flick Hatchet before yesterday, but news that Danielle Harris has joined the cast has upped my expectations significantly. Harris, best known for her work in the Halloween series (parts 4, 5 and Zombie's reboot and sequel) is set to take on the role of Marybeth (a role played by Tamara Feldman in the original film) in director Adam Green's follow-up.

News of the casting broke yesterday on Harris' twitter account. Green then followed it up with comments about the news and the direction of the film. The filmmaker tells Bloody-Disgusting "She's the new Marybeth. Everything that this movie is trying to be is to get better...case in point is that it brings fans what they want and is going to make 'Hatchet 2' even better. [There's] a new[ly designed] Victor Crowley and the whole cast is f*cking amazing! To have another icon as a leading role is enormous."

The sequel focuses on Marybeth, who escapes from Crowley, learns more about the curse, then returns to his hunting grounds to end his reign of terror once and for all.

Other stars joining Harris in the cast include Tony Todd, John Carl Buechler, and Kane Hodder, who returns as Victor Crowley.

No official release date has been set for Hatchet 2 (the teaser poster simply says "2010"), but you'll read it here at Horror Squad when it's announced.
