Salma Hayek is also close to signing up.

Emir Kusturica of Serbia will direct. He told an audience at the Turin Film Festival in Italy that a script he's written with collaborator Gordan Mihic ('Time of the Gypsies,' 'Black Cat, White Cat') is finished but the shooting will not start until 2011 due to Depp's prior commitments.

The movie will be in Spanish, including Depp's parts. Some filming is set to take place in Mexico.

Villa (1878-1923) is a national hero to Mexicans, who laud him as a revolutionary hero and defender of the poor. In 1916 he raided Columbus, N.M., as the U.S. was supporting Villa's opposition at the time. The U.S. then sent a force into Mexico to hunt down Villa, but the troops never caught him.

The movie will be based on biographical novel, 'The Friends of Pancho Villa,' by James Carlos Blake, which tells of a lusty Villa who enjoyed fighting and robbing the rich as well as partying and making love.

Villa's story has been told many times on screen, even by Villa himself. He starred in 1914's 'The Life of General Villa,' produced by D.W. Griffith ('Birth of a Nation').

Depp's parade of bad boys includes Jack Sparrow in the 'Pirates of the Caribbean' series, Sweeney Todd in 'Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street' and John Dillinger in this year's 'Public Enemies.'

Depp and Kusturica previously worked together on 'Arizona Dream' in 1993.
