UPDATE: We got owned. Hard. Arrow in the Head revealed all of the news you see below is a fake. From Arrow:

"So they contacted Aullidos and laid it all out on the table. They have never heard of REC 3, and therefore the website, the poster, and Facebook page are all fake! There are no plans for a REC 3 just yet, which would make sense considering REC 2 hasn't hit or (if it has) it hasn't made quite the splash I'm assuming they were hoping."

Everyone loves [REC], and for those who have seen it, its intense sequel (which was reviewed by our own Peter Hall and what I consider to be the best first-person shooter ever made). If I can be perfectly frank, I just don't trust people who don't. They are both highly original films and manage to utilize the much-maligned cinema verite style of film-making in a way that didn't invoke the feeling of nausea and vomiting in viewers. Now that's talent.

For those who can't live without a trilogy, Shock has informed us that [REC] 3 has officially begun pre-production. Set for a release date at some point in 2011, the third entry in the series has a Facebook page and a teaser website set up to give fans a taste of what's to come. Unfortunately, there is a downside.

In an exclusive interview with Boody-Disgusting, it was revealed that
Jaume Balaguero and Paco Plaza, the two creators and writer/directors of the first two, will not direct, but instead produce. While I'm incredibly wary of changing directors for sequels, it is not always a bad thing, but as usual we'll just have to wait and see.
