Independent Spirit Award 2010 Nominations AnnouncedUsually taking place beach side with guests often wearing their best casual attire, the Independent Spirit Awards have always been the antithesis to the high-glam, self-important Oscars -- shining a light on low-budget fare often overlooked by the public and other, more commercial, award shows.

In this morning's announcement, Academy award nominee Taraji P. Henson and two-time Spirit award winner Matt Dillon read off the nominations for Film Independent's 25th Independent Spirit Awards.

'Precious,'
now a usual suspect when it comes to awards attention, was fully spoken for with five nominations, while 'The Last Station' surprised with five nominations as well. Both pictures are firmly represented in the Best Picture, Director and Actress categories. Also nabbing Best Feature nods were this summer's critically adored anti-romantic comedy '(500) Days of Summer,' 'Sin Nombre' and 'Amreeka,' while Oren Peli, director of this fall's word-of-mouth horror blockbuster 'Paranormal Activity,' scored a nomination for Best First Feature.

The real head-scratcher, though, is the absence of Hal Holbrook in a Best Male Lead spot for 'That Evening Sun.' Co-players Mia Wasikowska and Raymond McKinnon are deservedly sitting in the Supporting categories, yet Holbrook's delicate, layered lead performance is passed over?

Also, Joaquin Phoenix and his film 'Two Lovers' were both clearly snubbed in their respective categories of Lead Actor and Best Feature.

And don't get me started on the 'Gentlemen Broncos' nod. Seriously, FIND?

FIND's 25th Independent Spirit Awards show will trade Santa Monica beach for downtown L.A. on the celebratory night of March 5, and will air live, uncut at 8 PM PST/11 PM EST on IFC.
