Well, that's what Oren Peli's low-budget screamer 'Paranormal Activity' has achieved in only five weeks of national release. According to the film's distributor, Paramount, 'Paranormal' has crossed the coveted $100 million mark as of today.

The studio started with a grass-roots marketing style by showing free midnight screenings in college towns followed by its "Demand It" strategy, which asked fans to request the film be played in their towns. That led to the film breaking the 22-year-old record of the highest weekend grosser at 200 locations or less in early October with $7.1 million (held previously by 'Platoon', $3.7 million). Finally, it hit number one at the box office two weeks later after going out nationwide.

"I am thrilled and very thankful to the fans who have supported the movie from the beginning," Peli told Moviefone this morning. "Passing $100 million is totally overwhelming and I'm still trying to process it."

Now the film's sights are set on passing what's considered the highest grossing independent film of all time -- and the film that trail blazed its success -- 'The Blair With Project' ($140 million). But Peli is keeping it all in perspective. "How about we talk about that if it actually happens?"
