'National Treasure' director Jon Turteltaub is on board to produce a film on the origin of Greenpeace. Aurelius Films is handling the financing. The project will be produced by Jerry and Janet Zucker of Zucker Productions. Janet and Jerry, no slouches to activism themselves, started Proposition 71, the California Stem Cell Research and Cures Initiative, which passed in 2004.

The untitled Greenpeace project will chronicle the rise of the environmental movement from the perspective of Bob Hunter and Rex Weyler, the organization's founders. Matthew Joynes of Aurelius Films, who is also serving as a producer on the film, secured the rights to biographies by the inventors of Greenpeace. Rex Wyler's "Greenpeace: How a Group of Ecologists, Journalists, and Visionaries Changed the World" and Bob Hunter's "Warriors of the Rainbow: A Chronicle of the Greenpeace Movement" will serve as a basis of the story. "We want to look at these unlikely heroes who became activists in spite of themselves," Janet Zucker told Variety. "Jon likes to make a big adventure movies. And we've found that the best way to reach people's hearts and minds is through entertainment." 'The West Wing' creator Aaron Sorkin has been approached to write the script.

In 1971 Bob Hunter, according to his Greenpeace bio, was a "hippy journalist in Vancouver, coined the term Greenpeace. The counterculture theme extends, organically, to the production side. Jerry Zucker is a faithful donor to progressive causes and Janet Zucker is a co-chair of The Science & Entertainment Exchange.
