'Miss Saigon,' which opened on the West End in 1989 and then moved to Broadway, where it played for more than a decade, transfers the story of Giacomo Puccini's opera 'Madame Butterfly' to the war in Vietnam. It follows a doomed romance between an American soldier and a 17-year-old Vietnamese bar girl in the waning days of the conflict.

Wagner began her Hollywood career as an agent at Creative Artists Agency and then teamed with client Tom Cruise to form Cruise/Wagner Prods., which went on to produce such massive hits as the 'Mission Impossible' films and 'The Others.' In 2006 Cruise and Wagner bought into United Artists, but the partnership fell apart and she left in 2008 to form her own company.

'Madame Butterfly' has been the cocoon for a number of adaptations, including a 1932 film version starring Sylvia Sidney and Cary Grant. In 1988 David Henry Hwang transformed the story into 'M. Butterfly,' which played on Broadway for 777 performances and became the basis for David Cronenberg's 1993 film starring Jeremy Irons and John Lone. And in 1996 Weezer released the album 'Pinkerton,' which was loosely based on the opera.

A screenwriter is about to be set for Wagner's production of 'Saigon,' with financing discussions underway with an eye toward production next year for a 2011 release. And, separately, Wagner is developing a stage musical about the rise of hip-hop pioneers Run-DMC.
