New DVD Movie Releases for October 20
'Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen'
What It's About: In this blockbuster sequel from director Michael Bay, the Decepticon forces return to Earth for more battles against the good-guy Autobots; major bad-boy Megatron also has a score to settle with Sam Witwicky (Shia LaBeouf), who thwarted him in the first go-round two years ago. The plot has something to do with something called 'the matrix,' but it's really all about robotic monstrosities morphing out of everyday appliances and vehicles and battling each other in metal-crunching glee.
It's Kind of Like: 'Transformers' ... but bigger and louder
What We Say: You definitely need a scorecard to tell who's doing what to whom; if you've seen one Transformer, you've seen them all. More mindless special effects and CGI than one would ever think was possible, but hey, it hits the mark with its intended audience. And despite the presence of Megan Fox, Sam's heart belongs to his car.

What It's About: A courtesan (Michelle Pfeiffer, looking radiant) in turn-of-the-century Paris -- La Belle Epoque -- has an erotic affair with a much younger playboy (Rupert Friend), the son of another courtesan. All goes well until an arranged marriage takes the young man away from her. Adapted from Colette's 1920 novel.
It's Kind of Like: 'Dangerous Liaisons' meets 'The Graduate'
What We Say: This art-house lovefest, directed by Stephen Frears, has trouble lighting its own fire; there's just no spark between Pfeiffer and Friend, making their love affair a tad uninvolving. The best parts of the film: The always-reliable Kathy Bates, who's feisty as the young man's mother, and the lush French scenery.
