'The Tourist' is a remake of the 2005 French thriller 'Anthony Zimmer.' Jolie will play an Interpol agent who ensnares a tourist in her effort to nab a criminal who is also her ex. Sam Worthington, star of James Cameron's upcoming 'Avatar,' will play the traveler.

Originally, Jolie's role was earmarked for Charlize Theron, with Tom Cruise in the title role. Cruise's 'Valkyrie' screenwriter Christopher McQuarrie even rewrote the script, first drafted by 'Gosford Park' scribe Julian Fellowes. But then, Cruise dropped out to do another movie. Worthington came aboard, but the project idled in development until Jolie picked it up.

Von Donnersmarck hasn't made a movie since his Oscar victory for 'Lives.' That film was about an East German secret policeman who develops a crush on a woman he's spying on, so the director certainly knows plenty about surveillance, sexual betrayal, and international intrigue. So does Jolie, who'll next be seen in the spy thriller 'Salt,' due in theaters next July.
