Kristen BellWill Kristen Bell finally strip away her girl-next-door persona for the edgy role she deserves? After laboring as a housewife and ex-girlfriend in such mainstream comedies as 'Couples Retreat' (in theaters now) and 'Forgetting Sarah Marshall,' the 'Veronica Mars' star has been cast opposite Christina Aguilera in 'Burlesque,' a musical drama from Sony's Screen Gems genre label.

According to the Hollywood Reporter, Bell will play the star attraction in a steamy Los Angeles nightclub who goes over the edge when an ambitious small-town girl (Aguilera) with a big-town voice suddenly gets the spotlight. Already cast are Cher as the nightclub owner and Stanley Tucci as the man who helps turn Aguilera from a country bumpkin to a flamboyant bombshell. Shooting begins Nov. 9, with a Thanksgiving 2010 release date scheduled.

This could be the dramatic breakout that Bell needs; her career arc hasn't exactly been all that impressive. After playing pretty girls on a host of TV shows, she earned raves and a legion of fans with 'Mars,' playing the tube's most beautiful detective for four years. But aside from the well-received 'Forgetting Sarah Marshall,' since then she's appeared in mostly by-the-numbers rom-coms, awful horror movies ('Pulse') and little-seen indies ('Fanboys,' 'Fifty Pills'). Hopefully 'Burlesque' will give the petite actress a better opportunity to show off her talents.
