Adrien BrodyAdrien Brody is the new Arnold Schwarzenegger. Seriously.

In a surprise move, the Oscar-winning 'Pianist' thespian has signed on for his first action hero role in 'Predators,' Fox's Robert Rodriguez-scripted-and-produced, Nimrod Antal-directed reboot of the franchise that kicked off with 1987's 'Predator.'

Though the lanky actor doesn't quite fill out a tank top the same way that Ahnuld did (he better start chugging protein shakes instead of Diet Coke if he wants to), Brody is tackling a character very similar to the one portrayed by Schwarzenegger in the original. He'll play the courageous leader of a band of mercenaries who, while on a mission in the jungle, are hunted by dreadlocked aliens bent on killing them.

Brody's casting is a very interesting play on the part of both the studio and Brody. Brody's never been a huge box-office draw and doesn't exactly jump to mind as the archetypal musclebound action hero, but perhaps Fox believes that his involvement will lend the project an air of prestige that's often missing from genre films such as this one. For Brody's part, Variety reports that the actor "lobbied hard" to nab the role and even signed options to return for potential sequels, indicating that maybe -- just maybe -- this is one franchise reboot that will rely on both brawn and brains.

Further upping the movie's skinny-dude-as-action-hero quotient and piquing our interest, the Hollywood Reporter adds that Topher Grace ('Spider-Man 3') is also in talks to join the cast as an affable accountant whose mellow exterior masks the fact that he's a raging serial killer. Alice Braga ('I Am Legend'), Rodriguez staple Danny Trejo ('Machete'), Walton Goggins ('The Shield'), UFC fighter Oleg Taktarov, Mahershalalhashbaz Ali ('The 4400') and Louiz Ozawa are already on board as member's of Brody's team.

On-location filming is set to begin shortly in Hawaii, and audiences will get their first taste of Adrien Brody: Action Hero when 'Predators' hits theaters on July 9, 2010. Get pumped.
