Paranormal ActivityHollywood just can't seem to leave Area 51. Fifteen years after 'Independence Day' made the notorious location of the Air Force's alien investigations wing a household term, Paramount Pictures has given 'Paranormal Activity' writer-director Oren Peli the go-ahead to tackle aliens in his follow-up film, appropriately entitled 'Area 51.'

The move comes in the wake of the breakout success of 'Paranormal' -- a low-budget indie about a couple terrorized by a demonic spirit -- which Paramount rolled out in a series of underground 'Rocky Horror'-style midnight screenings two weeks ago and is now expanding to round-the-clock showings this weekend in 40 cities. 'Area 51,' which will begin shooting next week, will use the same "found footage" structure employed by 'Paranormal' to tell the tale of three curious teens who just have to make it to Nellis Air Force Base in Nevada to get some face time with our interstellar neighbors.

This time, Peli and 'Paranormal' producer Jason Blum have been given a $5 million budget by Aramid Entertainment Fund and Incentive Filmed Entertainment, compared to the measly $11,000 spent on 'Paranormal.'

The encouraging word-of-mouth on 'Paranormal' has producers hoping for the type of grassroots buzz for 'Area 51' that made 'The Blair Witch Project' a left-field hit 10 years ago. David Molner, chairman of Incentive and Aramid Capital Partners and Incentive Filmed Entertainment, told Variety, "Everyone looks for a franchise, and we really think Incentive has found its first one in this new property from Oren and Jason."

Could be. If we've learned one thing about aliens, from 'ET' to 'Starman,' they always come back.
