Last week, it was reported that Nicolas Cage hired a witch doctor to come rid the set of his latest project ('The Sorcerer's Apprentice') of what he believed to be a hex placed on the film. Widely reported. In fact, just about every site and rag that covers movies or celebrities reported the item as gospel (Full disclosure: Moviefone included the item in our gossip roundup). They/We can't ALL be wrong, right? Last week, it was reported that Nicolas Cage hired a witch doctor to come rid the set of his latest project ('The Sorcerer's Apprentice') of what he believed to be a hex placed on the film. Widely reported. In fact, just about every site and rag that covers movies or celebrities reported the item as gospel (Full disclosure: Moviefone included the item in our gossip roundup). They/We can't ALL be wrong, right?

Wrong. We caught up with the actor in lower Manhattan last night, and he was adamant about clearing the air. "I do want to make clear ... I did NOT hire a voodoo priestess to break a hex on the movie. 100 percent false." Cage blasted the media for having "no intention of checking their facts," and added, "I don't know why tabloids don't call up and ask before they print this..."

We can only assume Cage stopped himself short of an expletive. So there you go, tabloids, next time just dial him up (1-800-NIC-CAGE?).

Digging a little deeper into the rumor mill, while it's easy to see how such a story could be dreamed up (there had been two separate car accidents at the Times Square location shoot of 'Apprentice' over the course of a single week, both injuring crew members; the movie is about magic; and Cage has reputation for being a little, how do you say, eccentric), it's astonishing to see how it came to be reported as fact.

When you go back and read the initial report, it's pretty damn silly. According to the source, "Everyone was shocked when the voodoo woman arrived on the set. She was wearing a long black and purple dress had long stringy hair -- and carried a broom. She sprinkled 'Voodoo Dust' on the pavement as she chanted weird phrases to frighten bad spirits."

But worst of all is the original source for the report: the National Enquirer. Since when did we start trusting the National Enquirer, folks? There was a time when the rag's most legitimate story involved a three-headed martian baby birthed by Val Kilmer. But apparently when it comes to celebrity scoop, anything goes.

What's your take on the Cage story? And celebrity scoop in general? Do you believe what you read anymore? -- By Kevin Polowy
