With The Twilight Saga currently taking the entire world by storm, folks have been digging through tons upon tons of older material to see if there's anything similar they could exploit. After all, what good are original ideas anymore? What they found were The Vampire Diaries, a series of novels by L.J. Smith that -- whaddya know -- told the story of a high school girl torn between two vampire brothers. Originally published way back in 1991 as a trilogy, a fourth book was published in 1992 after fans pressured Smith for more. Then, in 2008 Smith announced a new spin-off trilogy called The Vampire Diaries: The Return, and The CW Television Network decided it might be a good idea to package the whole puppy up and sell it to television audiences while this Twilight thing was still alive and kicking like a mofo. Kevin Williamson (Scream, Dawson's Creek) was brought on as an executive producer and writer, and the new series will debut during the 2009-2010 season.

After the jump, watch Vampire Diaries actor Paul Wesley talk about the similarities and differences between his new show and The Twilight Saga.
