CATEGORIES New Releases, Box Office, Movie News, UK Box Office, New Releases, Cinematical, UK Box OfficeUnsurprisingly, the Samuel L. Jackson thriller Lakeview Terrace won box office honors last weekend with a solid $15 mil. Of the week's two wild cars, one fizzled (Ghost Town), while the other prospered (Igor). Lesson learned: Never underestimate adorable hunchbacks.
1. Lakeview Terrace - $15.0 million
2. Burn After Reading - $11. 0 million
3. My Best Friend's Girl - $8.2 million
4. Igor - $7.8 million
5. Righteous Kill - $7.4 million
This week's openings:
What It's About: Shia LaBeouf is forced to do all sorts of nasty things by an unfriendly cell phone caller.
Why It Might Do Well: LaBeouf is insanely popular, and so is talking on your cell phone wherever you go (including screenings of Eagle Eye).
Why It Might Not: Reviews have not been kind, but most PG-13 LaBeouf fans could probably care less.
Number of Theaters: 3,300
Prediction: $26 million
Nights in Rodanthe
What It's About: Richard Gere and Diane Lane romancing by the sea.
Why It Might Do Well: It's the final chapter in the epic Gere-Lane trilogy. Plus, it was written by Nicholas Sparks, and he's extremely talented at making your mother cry.
Why It Might Not: Reviews have not been kind, and Olivier Martinez is nowhere in sight.
Number of Theaters: 2,500
Prediction: $14 million
Miracle at St. Anna
What It's About: The relationship among black soldiers, a strange Italian kid and a sculpted head during World War II.
Why It Might Do Well: As Spike Lee may have mentioned, the role of black soldiers in WWII has been underrepresented in Hollywood.
Why It Might Not: Reviews have not been kind (anyone sensing a trend this week?).
Number of Theaters: 1,100
Prediction: $5 million
What It's About: Kirk Cameron(!) is a firefighter who looks to God to save his marriage.
Why It Might Do Well: The faith-based film is kicking ass in advanced ticket sales.
Why It Might Not: Most Americans would rather watch a 24-hour 'Growing Pains' marathon, and Andrew "Boner" Koenig is nowhere in sight.
Number of Theaters: 800+
Prediction: $5.1 million
And here are my fireproof picks for the week:
