  • Paul Erdman (c.1933-2007) - Economist and author whose book The Silver Bears was adapted as Silver Bears (aka Fool's Gold) with Michael Caine starring. He died April 24 in Sonoma County, California. (CBS)
  • David Halberstam (1934-2007) - Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist and author whose book The Amateurs was adapted as Rowing Through. He also appears in the Oscar-nominated documentary In the Year of the Pig. He was killed in a car crash April 23, in Menlo Park, California. (Variety)
  • Kirill Lavrov (1925-2007) - Russian actor who appears in Tchaikovsky, Taming of the Fire and The Brothers Karamazov, which he co-directed. He died April 27, in St. Petersburg. (RIA Novosti)
  • Axel Madsen (1930-2007) - Biographer who wrote books on Gloria Swanson, Barbara Stanwyck, William Wyler and Billy Wilder. He died of pancreatic cancer April 23, in Los Angeles. (LA Times)
  • Arve Opsahl (1921-2007) - Norwegian actor who starred as the character Egon Olsen 14 times for the popular "Olsenbanden" ("Olsen Gang") comedies of Knut Bohwim. He died of heart failure April 30. (Aftenposten)
  • Ronnie Phillips (c.1912-2007) - Diminutive actor who played an Ewok in Return of the Jedi. He also appears in Walter Hill's Hard Times. He died in a British hospital after a series of falls. (Contact Music)
  • Bobby 'Boris' Pickett (1938-2007) - Writer and singer of the novelty song "Monster Mash" who was known for his spot-on Boris Karloff impersonation. He also co-wrote Monster Mash: The Movie, which he also scored and acted in, and he appears in Strange Invaders, Lobster Man from Mars, The Baby Maker and Bill Condon's directorial debut, Sister, Sister. He died of leukemia April 25, in Los Angeles. (AP)
  • Anne Pitoniak (1922-2007) - Actress who played grandmother roles in Unfaithful, Bed of Roses and Hiding Out. She also appears in The Survivors, Agnes of God,Where the Money Is and Sister, Sister (co-starring with Bobby Pickett, who also died this week, see above). She died of complications from cancer April 22, in New York City. (NY Times)
  • Joseph Saleh (1934-2007) - Film producer and real estate investor who founded the Angelika Film Center (where I was formerly a manager) in New York City. The art house theater became a famous brand after Saleh sold it to City Cinemas in 1996. He also was an executive producer on Savages, Sweet Loraine and The Chair. He died of a stroke April 18, outside Paris. (NY Times)
  • Kottayam Santha (c.1940-2007) - Malayalam actress who appears in Palunku. She was found dead April 27, in Olassa. (New Kerala)
  • Hala Schauket/Shawkat (c.1922-2007) - Syrian actress who appears with Omar Sharif in Rendezvous with a Stranger. She died of brain cancer April 28, in Damascus. (Earthtimes)
  • Michael Smuin (1938-2007) - Choreographer who worked on Rumble Fish, The Cotton Club, Fletch Lives, The Golden Child and So I Married an Axe Murderer. He died of a heart attack April 24, in San Francisco. (NY Times)
